the third one, according to ibn hajar was probably a hypocrite and RasulAllah sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam knew about him. hence about him.
as you can see, AI is better than the human translator. ONE and THREE are AI translations TWO is the wahabi muhsin khan translation. https://sunnah.com/bukhari:66 === given below is my attempt: narrated by abi waqid al-laythi: Whilst RasulAllah ﷺ was seated in the masjid along with his companions, three men came by. Two of them approached RasulAllah ﷺ and [the third] one [kept walking and he] went away. The [first] two stood near the gathering of RasulAllah ﷺ. One of them saw a gap in the circle and sat there. The other sat behind other people. The third one turned on his back and went away. When RasulAllah ﷺ finished, he said: "Shall I not tell you about the three men? One of them came towards Allah and Allah granted His Mercy [and was Pleased with him] The other was shy and Allah forgave him [i.e. did not punish him] The [third] one who turned away from Allah, Allah is displeased with him. ==== it is a straighforward hadith but notice how many things were missed in translations. even AI got it أعرض right literally: ibn hajar says that the majlis was in the masjid and three men were walking by - not that they came directly to the majlis. two of them approached the majlis: one of them was forthcoming and eager to join; the second felt shy of walking away, so he came to the majlis. the third turned his face and kept walking. آواه means to come towards, seek refuge as in surah kahf. and the recompense was that Allah granted His mercy and was pleased. the other was not forthcoming, but he was shy of going away as well. so he came, albeit forced. Allah forgave him the third turned away - and Allah was displeased. a'araDa means displeased - even though the literal meaning is to turn away. but it is best to avoid this when we speak about Allah ta'ala to avoid hints of tashbih. ---- aqbala thalathata nafar. nafar means individual and used to describe people in a group, from 3 up to 9. aqbala means approach - came towards this way. two of them then approached the majlis - the third went his way. 'these' is not mentioned in the text and has no value addition. does not explain what this means. istaHyaa here means that Allah will not punish him. ==== muhsin khans: not necessarily. they 'stood' as they came to the majlis. one found a spot and sat there. the other sat behind where he could find a place to sit. in fact, the name of the chapter indicates the adab of those entering the majlis. we don't know if it was a sermon or zikr or preaching. literal translation of آواه but an alternative would help the reader what it means. "accommodated him" needless and implies that Allah ta'ala has to work with limits and constrains - so He has to "accommodate" clearly the translator is not familiar with the implications of the word. he felt shy from walking away from the Messenger of Allah. muhsin khan couldn't resist the wahabi urge. there is no mention of 'face' or 'wajh' in the hadith. but a'araDa was translated this way. === Allah ta'ala knows best.
any translator who is not familiar with arabic idiom, with ahkam, with familiarity with other islamic sciences such as aqidah AND commentaries will only translate words. and these days, AI translators are better than them. I randomly selected a hadith and took the translation from both human and AI translators. please don't look up which is which until you identify yourself and please don't post here still for one day at least, to let other members test it out. disclaimer: none of the translations are mine. Three men came; two of them approached the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and one went away. The two stood before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him); one of them saw a gap in the circle and sat in it, the other sat behind them, and the third turned away and left.* When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) finished, he said: “Shall I not inform you about these three? As for one of them, he sought refuge with Allah, so Allah gave him refuge. The other felt shy, so Allah was shy with him. And as for the third, he turned away, so Allah turned away from him.” =============== TWO: Narrated Abu Waqid Al-Laithi: While Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was sitting in the mosque with some people, three men came. Two of them came in front of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and the third one went away. The two persons kept on standing before Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) for a while and then one of them found a place in the circle and sat there while the other sat behind the gathering, and the third one went away. When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) finished his preaching, he said, "Shall I tell you about these three persons? One of them betook himself to Allah, so Allah took him into His grace and mercy and accommodated him, the second felt shy from Allah, so Allah sheltered Him in His mercy (and did not punish him), while the third turned his face from Allah and went away, so Allah turned His face from him likewise. " ===== THREE: from Abu Waqid al-Laythi: While the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was sitting in the mosque with his companions, three men approached. Two of them came toward the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), while the third one left. The two stood before the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). One of them noticed a gap in the gathering and sat there, while the other sat behind the people. As for the third, he turned away and left. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) finished, he said: "Shall I inform you about these three men? As for the first, he sought refuge with Allah, so Allah granted him refuge. The second felt shy (to disturb), so Allah showed him mercy (lit., 'was shy toward him'). But the third turned away, so Allah turned away from him." ==============
Asalam Alaikum https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/126240988322 I had acquired the Jāmiʿ of Imām Tirmidhī from Farid Book Stall who I believe to be sunni due to some of their annotations. Doesn't look to be the best of translations. Dār al-Kutub al-Ilmiyah have also translated Bukhari. They are all better than the Darusalam version as they are to have struck some things out Allāh knows Best
